Window Quote Checklist: Match the Performance Rating to the Product
What to request with an aluminum window or door quote: product identity, whole-unit performance, operating style, glass, sizes, and supporting documents.
Short answer
A useful window quote identifies the actual system, operation, glazing, dimensions, and documentation behind its performance claims. Do not compare a whole-window rating on one quote with a glass-only figure on another.
Start with a product identity
Create one line for each opening, with an opening ID that matches the plans. List the operating style, frame system, quoted size, finish, glass package, screen, hardware, and quantity. Ask the supplier to distinguish the ordered unit size from the rough opening so those dimensions are not accidentally treated as interchangeable.
A quote described only as premium aluminum windows is difficult to compare. Two similar-looking elevations can contain different operating units, glazing, hardware, and installation requirements.
Read the ratings in context
NFRC explains that U-factor describes heat transfer performance, SHGC describes solar heat gain, visible transmittance describes daylight transmission, and air leakage describes air movement through the product. These values answer different questions; a favorable figure in one category does not replace the others.
Use the NFRC label and certification records where applicable, and ask which configuration the supplied documentation represents. Do not transfer a rating from one sample or product family to a different quoted unit without support.
Build a document checklist
For each claimed value, record the document title, the applicable product identification, and the configuration it covers. Mark anything that is still awaiting confirmation. The purpose is a traceable purchase decision, not a collection of brochures with impressive numbers.

Keep product performance and installation separate
A product report does not design the surrounding wall. Ask the project team to coordinate the opening, attachment, flashing, drainage, and interior finishes with the selected system. Record who will supply the installation details and who will verify them before ordering.
